As of August 1, 2008 the final code documents are in place for construction across the State of Michigan. New construction projects which are submitted for building plan review after August 1, 2008 must be submitted in accordance with the 2006 edition of the Michigan Building Code or the Michigan Residential Code.
Keep in mind that if a project was submitted for permit before August 1, 2008 the previous code series applies (2003 Building Code, 2005 NEC, 2006 Mechanical Code, 2006 Plumbing Code).
One of the most significant changes is the requirements for sprinkler protection in A-2 (restaurants, bars, nightclubs, etc) occupancies. The previous requirements for sprinkler protection included fire areas over 5,000 square feet, occupant load of 300 or more, or the floor is above the level of exit discharge. The big change will be a reduction to an occupant load of 100 ore more per fire area.

I am thinking about opening up a small barbeque place in Dowagiac, Mi. Mostly “to go” food with a very small amount of “sit down dining”. How do I find out what the reqirements are regarding the fire code prior to any needed construction or renovation?
Marcie, the best way is to discuss with the local fire chief/fire marshal as well as the local building official. Some quick research can usually get you in the right way. Do not overlook the local planning/zonning requirements as well
