Burn Survivor

Michigan Fire Inspectors is honored to present up to two survivors with a scholarship. The criteria and basis for the award is listed below. Applicants must submit a written narrative with supporting information as outlined below.

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Must be a burn survivor.
  • Must be a resident of the State of Michigan.
  • Currently a high school senior, earned a GED, or currently enrolled in a college, university, or trade school.
  • Accepted to an accredited college, university, or trade school, located in the State of Michigan.
  • Please attach the following items to your application: For High School Students: An official high school transcript that includes credits and GPA or official copy of GED.
  • Acceptance letter from college, university or trade school.

For College or Trade School Students:

  • An official transcript for current students that includes credits and GPA (if applicable).
  • A copy of invoice from your college, university or trade school, if available.

For All Students:

  • One letter of reference from non-school staff and non-family members.
  • One letter of reference from school staff; counselor, administrator or teacher/professor.
  • A type written essay answering each of the following questions: Each essay NOT to exceed one page.
  • Write each essay on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Write the number of the question and the question at the top of the page.
  • On what basis do you think that you are a deserving scholarship recipient? (Include life experience, community service you have done in the last four years).
  • How will your college/university degree or trade school certificate contribute to your life after you graduate?
  • How were you injured and how has your burn injury influenced and impacted your life and the person that you are today?
  • Other than family members, who is one individual that you consider your hero, heroine, or role model? What characteristics, achievements, etc. do you admire about the individual and how do they influence your life?

The Michigan Fire Inspectors Society will award two scholarships. One to a male applicant and one to a female applicant. Please submit your written response to us through our Secretary Ron Farr

2009 Joseph Klumstra2009 Burn Survivor

The scholarship program became a reality when it was awarded to Joseph Klumstra as the first recipient of the award. Joseph is a sophomore at Grand Valley State University and a lives in Ada Michigan.  Joseph and his father Mike attended the 60th annual awards banquet and received the award from Past President Phil McCormack
