The Michigan Bureau of Fire Services (BFS) and the Office of the State Fire Marshal will be in its new office location at 3101 Technology Blvd., Suite H, Lansing, MI 48910, effective March 11, 2013. This is in the approximate vicinity of US 127 and Jolly Road. Those traveling to the new BFS office location can take the Jolly Road exit off US 127 and travel north on Collins Road. The offices are located in the office park on the west side of Collins Road.

The Bureau of Fire Services mailing address, phones, and staff e-mail addresses stay the same. The BFS mailing address will remain the same at: P.O. Box 30700, Lansing, MI 48909. The BFS main telephone line will remain the same at 517-241-8847 All staff phone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same. New facsimile (FAX) numbers are: 517-332-1427 (Fire Services); or 517-332-1428 (Storage Tanks).

The BFS is home to the Office of Fire Fighter Training; Program Services and Plan Review Section. Also, the Aboveground Storage Tank Program, Underground Storage Tank Program, and the Gasoline Tank Truck Test Rule 627 Program, which were transferred from the Department of Environmental Quality to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, by Executive Order 2012-14, effective December 3, 2012.

The mission of the Bureau of Fire Services is to protect the lives and property by fostering a fire-safe environment through inspections, plan review, enforcement, regulation, fire fighter training, data collection and public fire education.

The BFS provides statewide regulatory enforcement of fire safety through inspections of schools, colleges and universities including dormitories; penal facilities; health care facilities; nursing homes; adult foster care centers; and children’s day camps. The BFS provides certification of fire inspectors, fire sprinkler technicians and firms; approves testing laboratories; oversees the Fire Prevention Code and provides Emergency Support Functions in the State Emergency Operations Center. The BFS administers the Fireworks Safety Program, the Fire Safe Cigarette Program, and oversees regional offices in Lansing, Detroit Grand Rapids and Gaylord.

The BFS sees no disruption in services and assures continuous operations and responsiveness to the needs of its customers, the more than 33,000 career, part-paid, and volunteer fire fighters in Michigan.

New Certificates to be Mailed This Month

For those inspectors who have their state certification you will notice that they expire at the end of December 2012.  Please remember that those inspectors with the necessary continuing education credits will auto-renew.  This means your certificate will be dropped in the mail and sent to the address you have on file without you sending in a new application or fee.

If you have moved and not updated your mailing address please email your address to hookerb@michigan.gov.

If you are short Continuing Education credits a credit statement will be mailed to you.  This statement should be verified for accuracy.  Inspectors who did not complete the necessary continuing education will have a six month grace period to gain the necessary continuing education credits.

Remember it is your responsibility to track your continuing education credits.   If you have questions please feel free to email on of your board members

The Bloomfield Township Fire Department (BTFD) was recently awarded a $64,150 grant from the federal government for the purchase and installation of 1,675 wireless smoke detectors. This is a highly competitive grant program and the BTFD is currently one of just four fire departments in the State of Michigan to receive an award during this funding cycle. The money will fund a project that enables early notification and protection of high risk groups of children, adults, and seniors in the 24 adult foster care facilities and the five most populated multi-unit residential apartment/condominium complexes in Bloomfield Township.

“We are strongly committed to enacting this potentially lifesaving program. Bloomfield Township will share 10% of the overall costs. This project will give back to the community and better protect the thousands of residents who live in these homes,” said Fire Chief Dave Piche’.

Wireless smoke detector systems use the latest technology to “talk” to one another. If one detector in a building senses smoke, it alerts all other detectors in that system simultaneously. This interconnectivity provides the best advanced notification for occupants. It gives residents or caregivers additional time to evacuate in the event of smoke or fire. The detectors operate on batteries and can be added to existing wired systems to enhance the coverage a residence may already have.

Conference Starts Tuesday

Our 63rd annual educational conference and annual business meeting starts on Tuesday September 11, 2012 at 9:00 am (registration opens at 7:30 am).  The opening ceremonies will include a remembrance service for 9/11 as well as a keynote speech from NFPA’s President Jim Shannon.

**** Note:  Class A Uniform or department equivalent are encouraged for the first day****

The conference will begin the Big Ten Room A and packet pick up will be in front of the room.  Onsite registration will be available as well as coffee and pastries.  This is a great time to network with inspectors from across the State of Michigan as well as obtaining critical updates for fire inspectors.
